Nurses are professionals who are held to a high standard of ethical and moral conduct. Social media provides a platform for nurses to share information, connect with others, and build relationships. However, posts that are inappropriate or unethical can create legal problems for nurses as well as the field of nursing. Inappropriate posts can lead to allegations of defamation, misconduct, or even fraud. Unethical posts can lead to allegations of patient abandonment, neglect, or even abuse. In some cases, social media posts have been used as evidence in legal proceedings (Oducado et al., 2019). It is important for nurses to remember that what they post online is public and can be viewed by anyone, including attorneys and regulators. The purpose of this assignment is to discuss why nurses have an obligation to uphold a standard of conduct consistent with the standards governing the profession of nursing at work and in their personal lives.
There are a few social media posts that I have engaged in which might be considered inappropriate based on the professional standards of nursing. The first example is a post in which I made a joke about a patient. While this may have been appropriate among friends, it was not appropriate for posting online. Another example is a post in which I shared an image of myself with my patients. This could potentially be seen as crossing the line between professionalism and personal life. Lastly, I have posted images of nurses working alongside patients without obtaining consent from the nurses beforehand. This could be seen as violating the privacy of the nurses involved.

As professional caregivers, nurses have a responsibility to uphold the highest standards of conduct both at work and in their personal lives. This commitment to ethics and professional excellence is essential to providing quality care for patients and maintaining the public trust. Further, it is important to remember that nurses are role models for others in the healthcare profession, as well as for members of the community at large. What they do and how they behave can have a big impact on others, both professionally and personally (De Gagne et al., 2019). So it is incumbent upon them to always act with professionalism. The governing standards for the nursing profession are set by various organizations, including the International Council of Nurses and the American Nurses Association. These organizations provide ethical guidelines that nurses should adhere to in their practice. In addition, most hospitals and healthcare facilities have their own code of conduct that nurses are expected to follow. Some of the principles that all nurses should uphold include maintaining confidentiality, treating patients with respect and compassion, promoting patient safety, and advocating for social justice.
There are many ways in which personal conduct can violate HIPAA or be considered unethical or unprofessional. For example, discussing a patient’s medical condition in public or sharing pictures of a patient without their permission can both violate HIPAA regulations (De Gagne et al., 2019). Similarly, behaving in a way that is rude or hostile to patients, making derogatory comments about patients, or sexualizing patients can all be considered unethical and unprofessional behavior. Each healthcare organization should have their own specific guidelines on what constitutes acceptable and unacceptable personal conduct.
